Here at Heptagon we build the bulk of our sites using WordPress as a content management system (CMS). This makes it simple for you to go in and edit your existing content, or add new content and pages, all without any HTML or coding knowledge.

There are two ways to use the WordPress software: have it managed on WordPress.com, or manage it yourself using software from WordPress.org. Thus the question, what’s the difference between WordPress.com and WordPress.org?

WordPress.com

You may have seen a blog or two with a URL like somebody.wordpress.com. They’re using WP.com, which is an extremely popular hosted blogging platform. WP.com is pretty much a plug-and-go system. You sign up, pick your blog address and some theme options and you’re ready to start blogging away!

Here’s what the folks at WordPress have to say:

Focus on your beautiful content, and let us handle the rest.

Benefits

Many of the benefits (besides ease-of-use) come from being part of the managed platform. Security, content backups, updates and spam control are all in place, automatic and highly functional. Also WP.com sites are located on a robust and efficient server which minimizes downtime and site slowdowns.

Drawbacks

There are a few drawbacks, though. For instance, you’re stuck with the yourname.wordpress.com address format (that is, unless you purchase a domain and set it up to forward to your WP.com address – not too difficult).

Also, if you want to customize your blog site, the options are very limited. There are 228 (at time of posting) WP.com themes that you can use and (somewhat) modify, but you can’t use a custom theme or alter any of the PHP code that runs your site’s functionality. This is the big one.

If you want your own fully custom website, then forget about WordPress.com and head on over to WordPress.org!

WordPress.org

Here’s the scoop on WordPress.org, direct from the source:

WordPress is free blogging software. With WordPress, you can install themes and plugins, run advertisements, edit the database and even modify the PHP code that powers your site. Anyone can download the software for free from http://wordpress.org, but it must be installed on a web server before it will work.
